With the spring/summer season finally after a long, gruelling winter, it’s that time of year when we’re all spending more time in the garden tending to the lawn and giving our lawn the first grass cutting of the year.
Cutting the grass may seem like a straightforward enough chore, but read on and you may be surprised to learn a few things from our list of essential grass cutting tips!
Grass Cutting Frequency
It’s a good idea to get into a regular schedule of lawn mowing over spring and summer. This way, it becomes a habit and the lawn doesn’t get left to become unruly.
During spring you can mow the lawn every couple of weeks, whilst when we get into summer you will likely need to mow it once a week.
Weather
Make sure not to mow on rainy days; if the ground is wet this can lead to smearing and rutting of the soil. You’ll then end up with clumps of soaking wet clippings smothering your lawn which isn’t ideal for the health or appearance of your grass.
Mower Service
We would recommend ensuring your lawnmower is subject to a full service at the beginning of spring. Ensure that the blades are sharp otherwise bruising of the grass may occur which is unsightly.
Cleaning out your lawnmower frequently will help to ensure that clippings do not accumulate.
Grass Height
Don’t cut your grass too short! A good rule of thumb is to aim to reduce grass height by a third. Try to keep the final height at around two and a half to four centimetres; go below this and you risk detrimental effects to lawn health.
You can keep it a little longer than this in shady sections of the garden. Make sure to adjust the height setting on your mower to achieve the desired finish.
Edging
Remember not to neglect the edges of the lawn. If these are straggly it can diminish the appearance of the whole garden. For a pro look, make sure to get those lawn edges neat and tidy using either shears or a lawn edger tool.
